Mirena Coil case against GP settles
Eoin Kearney recovered damages on behalf of a client who received negligent treatment at her GP Practice relating to the insertion of a Mirena coil. Upon the insertion of the Mirena coil, our client began to experience severe abdominal pain. However, it was not until 2 months later that it was seen through a pelvic x-ray that the Mirena coil had been inserted to deeply and had migrated into our client’s stomach. Our client was subsequently diagnosed with a uterine rupture and had to undergo surgery to have the Mirena coil removed.
Following this, our client believed that her medical care had been negligent and that she suffered unnecessarily. As a result, she contacted our office and we began to investigate the issues around her medical care. We engaged an independent medical expert who provided a report on whether our client’s care had been negligent. This Consultant found that our client’s GP had inserted the Mirena coil too deeply with an unreasonable use of force which resulted in the perforation of her uterus. It was also found that there was a failure in the investigation to locate the Mirena coil.
Liability was admitted by the legal team representing the GP Practice and our client was elated with the outcome and compensation of £32,500 achieved in a very short space of time from initial instructions to conclusion.
