Client receives £100,000 for delay in diagnosis of bowel obstruction due to treatment received in England
Emma Williamson acted on behalf of a Plaintiff who sustained a delay in her admission and treatment for the symptoms of bowel obstruction. This was an extremely complex case involving multiple allegations against several medical institutions which our client had attended with symptoms prior to the diagnosis. Investigation required input from various specialties to include GP, A&E, Colorectal and Psychiatry expert witnesses. It was established that if our client was diagnosed and treated at an earlier stage, the complications which she developed such as infection, sepsis, wound dehiscence and the requirement for an 8-week hospital stay would have been avoided.
The case was complicated by one of the Defendant hospitals the Plaintiff attended being in England and therefore outside the jurisdiction of Northern Ireland. However, as liability was denied, proceedings were commenced in the High Court in Belfast.
Prior to the exchange of medical evidence, settlement discussions took place and our client received damages of £100,000 to appropriately compensate her in relation to her injuries.
